Formal Semantics in Modern Type Theories: Is It Model-Theoretic, Proof-Theoretic, or Both?

چکیده

In this talk, we contend that, for NLs, the divide between model-theoretic semantics and proof-theoretic semantics has not been well-understood. In particular, the formal semantics based on modern type theories (MTTs) may be seen as both model-theoretic and prooftheoretic. To be more precise, it may be seen both ways in the sense that the NL semantics can first be represented in an MTT in a modeltheoretic way and then the semantic representations can be understood inferentially in a proof-theoretic way. Considered in this way, MTTs arguably have unique advantages when employed for formal semantics.

Formalization of Coercions in Lexical Semantics

Originally developed for use in programming languages with simple type systems (see, for example, [22]), coercions between types, including many subtypes of the type of entities (eventualities, physical objects, informational objects, etc.), have been widely employed in linguistic semantics [26, 30, 28, 3]. There are, however, two problems with coercions. First, it has been unclear how coercion...

Modern Type Theories for Natural Language Semantics (Introductory Course in Language and Logic)

Modern Type Theories (MTTs) provide us with a new framework for formal semantics with attractive advantages as compared to Montague Grammar. First, MTTs have rich type structures that can be employed effectively to capture various linguistic features that have proved difficult in the Montagovian setting. Second, MTTs are prooftheoretically specified and can hence be usefully implemented in proo...

Sequent Calculi and Bidirectional Natural Deduction: On the Proper Basis of Proof-theoretic Semantics

Philosophical theories of logical reasoning are intrinsically related to formal models. This holds in particular of Dummett–Prawitz-style proof-theoretic semantics and calculi of natural deduction. Basic philosophical ideas of this semantic approach have a counterpart in the theory of natural deduction. For example, the “fundamental assumption” in Dummett’s theory of meaning (Dummett, 1991, p. ...

Georg Schiemer (lmu Munich) Semantics in Type Theory

Logical type theory was first introduced in Russell & Whitehead’s Principia Mathematica (1910-1913) and then modified substantially in the 1920s and 30s by Ramsey, Carnap, Gödel, and others. In that period, it was no longer conceived primarily as a foundational system in Russell’s original sense but rather as the “natural” system of logic with several non-foundational applications in mathematic...

A Proof Theoretic Interpretation of Model Theoretic Hiding

Logical frameworks like LF are used for formal representations of logics in order to make them amenable to formal machine-assisted meta-reasoning. While the focus has originally been on logics with a proof theoretic semantics, we have recently shown how to define model theoretic logics in LF as well. We have used this to define new institutions in the Heterogeneous Tool Set in a purely declarat...
